2. Use your compass and maps.
2. Use your compass and maps.
However, it's much more better than you walk without guidance. Recall where you come from and remeber if you make a turn and what direction the turn was.
3. Mark your way.
Whenever you move or leave your first place, give a mark, so that you can return to your first place. And it has possibility for people who looking for you could find your mark.
4. Stay put in your way.
4. Stay put in your way.
Remember, when you can't retrace your steps, then the best thing you can do is just stay put in your one place, Create a mark so that it can be seen by the air (like make SOS sign). Or you can sing loudly, or if you have a whistle, blow it.
5. Follow a drainage or stream downhill or downstream.
5. Follow a drainage or stream downhill or downstream.
It can lead you to a trail or road even a civilitation.
Ok...we have been prepared by controlling our movement. But doesn't mean everything has been settled. We still need prepare our self with skill for finding food, avoiding animals, and how to find water.
Let's start then as we still has many things to do...
Finding food
Get notice that health adult can survive up to three weeks without food unless it's cold. Make sure you know the food is safe before you eat it. Many various of plants can be find in forest. As we need food for survive, doesn't mean we can eat everything we find.
1. Insects and bugs
Yup...insects and bugs provide good nutrition, but remember always cook it before eat as it can harbor parasites to your body (some it can kill you). But do not ever eat any caterpillars, brightly coloured insects, or any insects that can bite or sting you. Remember if it has six legs or less, then mostly it save to eat. Remove the legs, head, and wings before eating.
2. Fish is your choice while you near the river.
3. Avoid eating mushrooms while many poisonous and deadly mushrooms. Unless you sure about which one is safe, don't eat it.
4. Avoid plants with thorns.
5. Avoid plants with white or yellow berries.
6. Stay away from plants with leaves in groups of three.
7. Stay away from plants with umbrella-shaped flowers.
8. Avoid beans or plants with seeds inside a pod.
9. Milky or discolored sap is a warning sign.
10. Avoid anything with an almond smell.
11. Fruits.
You can find various types of fruits from mangoes to bananas. Coconut is a good choice if you in a tropical forest.
Now let's see how we protect our self towards our pals in forest, yup...wild animals of course.
1. Bear
Lets pray that we would never meet this one. But it do, then practice this one: When attacked: stand your ground, Use pepper spray, or Play dead. (When standing your ground, try not to intimidate the bear, but rather, make yourself look important, like something the bear might injure itself with). Don't ever climb a tree as the bear is excellent climbers. But when you notice the bear watching or following you slowly, don't be afraid. The bear is stalking you and will find that you are not something the bear wants get mess with.
2. Snake
Strategy: Back away slowly. When attacked: Wash bite area with soap and water as soon as possible. Make sure the bite is lower than your heart. Drink lots of water as you make your way to a nearby hospital.
3. Mountain Lion
Use your arms and clothing to make yourself look as big as possible, then back away slowly. When attacked: Fight back, striking the animal's eyes and mouth.
4. Wolf
Back away slowly toward firm ground. When attacked: Charge one member of the pack, shouting and throwing rocks and sticks.
5. Gorilla
Behave submissively. Pet and groom animal if it is close to you. When attacked: Curl into a ball to protect yourself; remain submissive.
6. Bees
Run away without swatting at the bees. When attacked: Remove stingers by raking fingernail across stinger in a sideways motion. Do not push more venom into your bloodstream by squeezing stinger.
7. Fire Ants
Brush ants from your body as you flee the area. When attacked: Treat bites with antihistamine; if pustules form, treat with a solution of half water, half bleach.
8. Crocodiles
Flee very quickly run in zigzags, it's extremely hard for them to turn on land.
IN WATER-Go to the nearest safe place,(such as motor boat,in a tree)
If Attacked: when bit and pulled underwater-kick at its eyes or grab its throat and squeeze until it lets go and swim away and go to the nearest hospital.
Death Roll-roll the same way it's rolling so it doesn't rip you in half.
Finding water.
As animals need water, so use animal track to lead you to a stream. Even you find a stream, don't drink itdirectly. You should purify the water by boiling it about 10 minutes. You need container and fire. Dry woods is better for making fire. Or you also can collect bark and dried dung. If you don't have any container, you can use plastic. Yes plactic bottles are also working for boiling water. Fill the bottle with water and cap it.The lack of water should keep the bottle from melting. Or suspend it above the fire with rope so it just touch thebottom of bottle.
Green bamboo will be a good source of water as it has clear water in it. To access it, bend the top of a tree down about a foot off the ground and tie it off. Cut a few inches off the tip, put a container underneath and leave it overnight. The next day, you should have some drinkable water.
Tips:
1. Bring plenty of matches and lighter. Also bring even more water than you expect to drink.
2. Don't wander off one area unless you know the area. Keep your self at the track.
3. Animals are dangerous. Unless stated otherwise, don't make a fight with this one.
4. Keep away from brightly colored insects and extremely pungent.
